Pop Shots – High Times

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from Cardi B’s lofty comparison, to the K-pop song reaching new heights on YouTube, to which artist has become Billboard chart royalty, and since this is Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

* Cardi B posted an Instagram story where she called herself “hip-hop’s Britney Spears.” The only way this comparison could possibly make sense is if Cardi B’s kids were fathered by Kevin Federline.

* A biopic on Snoop Dogg will be hitting theaters in August of next year, with Jonathan Daviss cast to play Snoop. That’s Jonathan Daviss with two s’s, not Jonathan Davis with one s, but man, what I wouldn’t give to see THAT version of the biopic!

* PSY’s 2012 viral hit “Gangnam Style” has become the first K-pop video to surpass 6 billion views on YouTube. I’m not saying the current state of mainstream pop music is bad, but when people are revisiting “Gangnam Style” to the tune of 6 billion views, perhaps there should be some concern.

* During an interview on The Dan Patrick Show, Darius Rucker revealed he’s considering retiring from touring in two years. Hey, the man has blowfish to return home to!

* The NFL Kickoff Festival will be coming to Melbourne in September for a three-day event in honor of Australia’s first-ever regular season NFL game. The festival promises to have, among other things, performances from Australian musical icons. OK, I’m just gonna say this once – NFL, if you’re reading this, I need a Tonight Alive reunion, and I need it now!

* Future joined both Drake, and The Temptations, as the only acts with 17 albums to have reached #1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. This is further proof that streaming is ruining everything.

* Lizzo graced the cover of Sports Illustrated’s July 2026 digital swimsuit issue. One, I had no idea this existed. Two, it’s quite the odd consolation prize for your album bombing.

* In sad news, Jennifer Finch, bassist for the seminal rock band L7, passed away from brain cancer at the age of 59. The band is currently prepping for their farewell tour that will take place this fall, and perhaps through Finch’s passing, and the band’s final run, they will finally be given they accolades they have long deserved.
