NYC Scene Report – Colatura, Bad Mary, & We Are Scientists

This week’s NYC Scene Report features Colatura being honest, Bad Mary doing it live, and We Are Scientists wanting to keep it all in their music.

* Indie rockers Colatura have a new EP due out August 1st titled If I’m Being Honest, the first single off of which is “I Wanna Get Better.”

“I Wanna Get Better” features lyrics about some of the harsh realities of life, that sometimes the dreams we had in high school don’t come to fruition. Ultimately it’s a message to a younger self, a lament, but with a few small nuggets about surviving, and perhaps finding comfort in remembering simpler times.

The video features the band everywhere from the stage, to the playground to … the laundry room. Hey, we all need clean underwear, even indie rock bands (perhaps especially indie rock bands)!

Colatura now splits their time between Brooklyn, and Pittsburgh, but you can check out “I Wanna Get Better” right here.

* If you’ve ever been to a Bad Mary show you know the awesome energy the Long Island-based punk rock band has live. Even on the coldest winter nights, everyone on stage, and in the crowd works up a sweat, and a smile.

Bad Mary has captured that energy for their first live album, titled Live on Long Island, which is due out July 15th.

According to bassist Mike Staub, this project has been a long time coming. “We’ve always felt that our live performance is the true Bad Mary experience,” he said in a statement, “We love interacting with the crowd, and feeding off their energy.”

The first dose of that energy comes with the release of the video for the live version of their song “Marz Attaqx,” which was originally featured on their 2016 EP We Could Have Saved the World.

* We Are Scientists will be releasing their ninth studio album, titled Qualifying Miles, on July 18th, but their lead single is a little hush-hush.

Titled “Please Don’t Say It,” We Are Scientists’ Keith Murray (not to be confused with hip-hop legend Keith Murray) says, “I’m always happy to spew all kinds of drama in song, just don’t make me talk about it in person, okay? ‘Please Don’t Say It’ is, I guess, a song about being unwilling to confront my glitches anywhere but in that very song. Except now I’m talking here about using the song to not talk about it. Weird.”

I feel like we often know our own issues, and don’t need to hear them out loud, and to Keith’s point, creatives are sometimes most at home with their emotions when they’re doing the creative thing they love. With “Please Don’t Say It” We Are Scientists have captured all of that beautifully with a fantastic indie rock song.

Click play, and feel free to talk about “Please Don’t Say It.”
