NYC Scene Report – Big Girl, Late Again, & Laveda

This week’s NYC Scene Report features a look at office life with Big Girl suggesting you “quit ur job,” Late Again pondering doing exactly that, and Laveda with some cubicle craziness.

* Can’t stand your boss? Not feeling fulfilled by your gig? Big Girl has some advice for you with their latest single, “quit ur job.”

“quit ur job” is an idyllic indie rock song that espouses the virtues of having a little fun in life, and sticking it to the man, while simultaneously exposing the BS of the job interview process, and the daily grind.

The song is off the band’s latest EP, DYE, which Big Girl founder Kaitlin Pelkey recently discussed on social media, writing, “These songs come right from the heart. Songs of transformation, rebellion, defiance, grief, wonder, and gratitude for the people I love, and who love me. I dedicate this to all my friends. This EP is a love letter to you.”

In the case of “quit ur job” it’s also a love letter to finding a way to seize the day, so click play, and give it a listen. Bonus points if you crank it up while at work!

* Speaking of quitting jobs, that was exactly what was on Late Again’s mind when he began writing his latest single, “Easy On Myself.”

Discussing the breezy indie pop song in a statement, the Brooklyn-based Brazilian artist said, “The song was written when I was on the verge of quitting my job, and it talks about self-care, and getting back to basics in life as a response to our inherent emptiness. It also talks about biking.”

Late Again continued, adding, “Ironically, and by pure coincidence, the music video was shot on the day I finally quit. The voice memo sampled on the song's intro is literally from a BS Zoom meeting on my last day at work.”

“Easy On Myself” is the third single from Late Again’s upcoming EP, Clearly It’s All Staged, which is due out September 2nd.

While we wait for the EP, we can all go for a ride with him by clicking play on “Easy On Myself,” and heed his wise words regarding self-care. We could all use a little more of it.

* NYC-based rockers Laveda may not have quit their jobs, but in the video for their recently released single, “Cellphone,” they made an office their playground.

“This video was insanely fun to be in,” the band’s Ali Genevich said in a statement, “I felt like a kid in high school just fucking around in an office space.”

The clip is also a great representation of the song, which she says is “pure angst about wanting to rid yourself of your phone, and societal expectations.”

From the band’s upcoming third album, Love, Darla, which is due out September 12th via Bar/None Records, “Cellphone” can help anyone break free from whatever may be constraining them at the moment.

So what are you waiting for? Click play, and tear up an office with Laveda.
