Pop Shots – 6 Songs for a Lucky St. Patrick’s Day

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, with St. Patrick’s Day being today, and everyone looking to have the luck of the Irish, I’ve put together a quick playlist of half a dozen songs that are all about luck.

I know there’s plenty to do on this holiday – parades, feasting, and perhaps enjoying a green beer (or a Guinness for those of us who like our beer a little bit darker … than night) – so I’ll get right into this list of luck filled songs, and since this is Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

Get Lucky

This is the type of luck a lot of people are hoping for while celebrating in bars throughout the world today, but if you have one too many of those aforementioned green beers, you may be up all night, like the Daft Punk song says, but you’ll be doing something far different than getting lucky.

Lucky

With one of my favorite opening lyrics in recent memory – partially due to the lyric, partially due to the wonderfully soft delivery of it from Lucy Spazzy – “Lucky” is about feeling lucky to be with the person you’re with.

The song is off Lucy and the Rats’ 2020 album, Got Lucky, which was one of my faves from that year. Sadly, with no posts on their socials since 2022, it seems as though the band is no more, which is a shame, because their style of retro power pop was really great.

From what I can tell, Lucy now records under the name Lucy Ellis, so fingers crossed we’ll hear more from her soon.

Luck Be a Lady

Being that Frank Sinatra spent a heck of a lot of time in Las Vegas, you can be sure he knew a thing or two about luck, and while you may not be shaking up a pair of dice, or doubling down on a hand of blackjack, we can all relate to wanting luck in our corner.

Just remember, luck can be fleeting, so leave the table while you’re ahead!

Some Guys Have All The Luck

Some guys have all the luck, and Rod Stewart has definitely been one of those guys. How else would you describe a guy who was, at one point in time, married to Rachel Hunter? Could anything possibly be more lucky than being married to Stacy’s mom???

For those of us who aren’t quite as lucky, this song provides us something to sing along to.

You Got Lucky

I absolutely love the music of Tom Petty, which continues to age like fine wine. That said, on “You Got Lucky” he was kind of a dick. He’s literally telling a significant other that she should be glad he chose her, and she’s lucky to have him. He even tells her she can go if she thinks she can do better.

With all due respect to Tom Petty, based on these lyrics, I think she can!

Lucky

Speaking of women in bad situations, closing out this playlist is a tune about an unlucky young woman named Lucky, as Britney Spears gives us what has always felt like a slightly autobiographical tale about a girl who achieves stardom, yet despite everything looking great on the outside, she’s unhappy on the inside.

Maybe she was with Tom Petty in the previous song!

That’s all for this edition of Pop Shots, but come back next Monday for more shots on all things pop.
