NYC Scene Report – Momma, Bad Mary, & Pinky Verde

This week’s NYC Scene Report features Momma wanting you, Bad Mary keeping the Mega Bad Disaster Party going, and Pinky Verde wanting to “Make It Work.”
* Over the past half decade Brooklyn-based band Momma has had a rapid ascent in the indie music world, and it’s been well deserved. That ascent continues with the release of their latest single, “I Want You (Fever).”
Off their upcoming album, Welcome to My Blue Sky, due out April 4th via Polyvinyl Record Co. / Lucky Number, the band discussed the inspiration for the song in a statement, saying, “‘I Want You (Fever)’ is a song we wrote about wanting to be with someone who has a girlfriend, or someone who isn’t over their ex. It’s pining after someone, but there’s also some confidence knowing that that person wants to be with you.”
In addition to the release of Welcome to My Blue Sky, Momma will also be hitting the road in April for a North American tour that will run from April 25th through May 31st. They’ll then take on the world, with international tour dates in June.
Get a head start on all of that by checking out “I Want You (Fever),” which has fantastic ‘90s alternative vibes – think Veruca Salt meets The Breeders – and one of the catchiest choruses I’ve heard in quite some time.
* If what you want is a boisterous punk rock good time, you’re going to want to check out Bad Mary’s “Want What I Want.”
The song, which was written by the band’s guitarist, David Henderson, is from Bad Mary’s joint split 7-inch single with Mega Infinity titled Mega Bad Disaster Party, which was released via SPI (Ska Punk International).
Discussing “Want What I Want” in a statement, Henderson, who also created the music video, said, “I wrote this while crossing the street on my way to work. It’s about not caring what others think, and doing what you want. Live life, be kind, and have fun.”
Words to live by, and a song to rock out to. Bad Mary always sounds so damned good.
* Brooklyn-based musician Pinky Verde has made her triumphant return to the scene as a solo artist, and she’s ready to “Make It Work.” “Make It Work” being the title of her latest single.
On the release of the song, she wrote on Instagram, “It’s been 3 years since I have put anything out on the internet and I recorded this song probably 4 years ago so wowza.”
Wowza indeed! The alt-singer-songwriter song (if that isn’t a genre, I’m creating it now. Think singer-songwriter, but filled out with elements of alternative music) starts with a whistle, so I guess you could say Pinky Verde whistles while she makes it work. Combined with the opening guitar riff, it’s quite inviting, so click play, and accept Pinky Verde’s invitation to “Make It Work.”
