3 Reasons You Should See Pig Milk Live

When you see a name like Pig Milk on a venue’s calendar you have to be at least a little intrigued.

The NYC-based foursome of Mic Zammuto (vocals, keys, far right in photo), Lexie Viklund (drums, far left in photo), Jill Pesce (bass, center in photo), and recent addition Allegra Driscoll (guitar, not in photo), have been steadily building their name in the city’s indie rock scene over the past year, and if you let your curiosity inspire you to go inside when you see their band’s name, it will pay off in a big way.

Earlier this month the LGBTQ rockers were at Arlene’s Grocery, and on a rain soaked night they showed why we all need a little Pig Milk in our musical diet.

With a set consisting of mostly original material, their two covers – Joan Jett & the Blackhearts’ “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” and Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” – provided a great insight as to their overall vibe. They’re a rock band, and they like to kick ass.

Here are three reasons why you should witness them kick ass live.

They get better with every show

I first became aware of Pig Milk back in August of last year when they were on a four band bill at Bowery Electric. I was there to interview King Falcon, but I always check out as many acts as possible.

For Pig Milk, it was just their third show as a band, and they were still getting their feet wet.

Fast-forward to a few weeks ago at Arlene’s Grocery, and armed with a new guitar player, Pig Milk had grown by leaps and bounds.

Going from being just another band on the bill, to being a band everyone took notice of, it was impossible not to be impressed by their progress in just six short months. It was like a switch had been flipped, and they figured out exactly who they are as a band, and who they are is a band who can rock the heck out of a packed Arlene’s Grocery.

This Pig Milk is organic

Pig Milk is an organically grown band.

What I mean by this is that their rise has been completely organic.

Having almost no social media – only 15 posts on Instagram, and just 8 on TikTok – and no streaming (at least that I could find. Although I did find another Pig Milk that was a totally different band), Pig Milk is all about the live show.

Their crowd has grown via word of mouth, and if you want to hear the band, you’re going to have to purchase a ticket, and be in the crowd.

Whether intentional, or not, this is a very old school way of building a fan base, and personally I love it. They aren’t trying to go viral on the internet, and have just have a few fleeting moments of fame, they’re looking to build a legitimate fan base who loves their music, and ultimately create something that lasts.

You may find yourself in a lesbian mosh pit

Staying on the topic of their fan base, Pig Milk’s fans are an especially dedicated lot. One thing I really love about them is they say “Oink!” instead of the punk rock “Oi!” They also egged on the bassist and drummer to kiss, and the resultant smooch was met with loud cheers of approval.

Midway through the band’s set the crowd became especially boisterous, and it was at that point that I realized I was on the outer rim of what I would loosely describe as a lesbian mosh pit.

Don’t ever let anyone tell you there are no new experience in life. I’m 46, and that was definitely a first for me!

You have to love when a band, and their fans, have such a great connection with each other, and I think for Pig Milk that connection comes from the aforementioned organic rise they’ve been experiencing.

None of this is fabricated. It’s all real.

Long live the lesbian mosh pit!
