Pop Shots – Songs of St. Patrick … Sort Of

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, with St. Patrick’s Day coming up this weekend, I figured it was the perfect time to create another one of my themed playlists!

Other sites will give you Irish bands, songs about drinking, or maybe even songs about gold, but you know I like keep things weird here, which is why my St. Patrick’s Day playlist centers around St. Patrick … well, the name Patrick.

I’ve chosen six songs from artists named Patrick, or bands who have members named Patrick, to make the ultimate Patrick packed playlist! (somewhere, SpongeBob’s best friend is loving this)

So grab yourself a Guinness, or some corned beef and cabbage, and give these songs a listen!

Of course, since this is Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

Fall Out Boy

I think this one is pretty obvious since most folks know the frontman of Fall Out Boy is Patrick Stump, but let’s all take a minute to appreciate that this Patrick fronted, previously pop punk band has been giving us kick ass tunes for 23 years.

Fall Out Boy has nearly reached the quarter century mark as a band, and, thankfully, are showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Weezer

Hopefully you’ll be living it up like you’re in “Beverly Hills,” looking just like “Buddy Holly” on this holiday. If someone cancels those plans, your first thought will likely be, “Say it Ain’t So,” as the next band on this list is Weezer, who were co-founded by drummer Patrick Wilson.

While everyone else wears green on St. Patrick’s Day, don’t be surprised if Weezer fans choose to break out something blue, because the blue album is a classic!

The Doobie Brothers

A band whose catalog is filled with amazing tunes, The Doobie Brothers were co-founded by guitarist and singer Patrick Simmons.

I picked up the band’s greatest hits album a few years ago, and was floored by how many songs I recognized. Seriously, they’re one of those bands that has you constantly saying, “Oh wait, they did that song???” If you think you aren’t familiar with their music, I highly recommend doing a Doobie Brothers deep dive. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Train

Fronted by singer Pat Monahan (full name, Patrick Monahan), Train finally gives us an Irish Patrick on this St. Patrick’s Day list!

Interestingly, while Train is a pop-rock act, Monahan formed the band after the dissolution of his Led Zeppelin cover band, Rogues Gallery. His Zeppelin connection has remained strong, and in 2016 Train released Train Does Zeppelin II, which features the band covering Led Zeppelin II in its entirety. All of the profits from sales of Train Does Zeppelin II went to the San Francisco-based charity, Family House.

Pat Metheny

If you’re looking to add some jazz to your St. Patrick’s Day, the Patrick you’re looking for is Pat Metheny (Patrick Bruce Metheny).

The guitarist and composer fronted the Pat Metheny Group from 1977 to 2010, and has played solo, and in various side projects, ever since.

Metheny also holds the unique distinction of being the only person to have won Grammys in ten different categories. While I’m no fan of the Grammys, that’s pretty dang cool.

Pat Boone

Finally, we have the legendary crooner Pat Boone (Patrick Charles Eugene Boone).

Boone’s resume is incredible, having sold more than 45 million records, and racking up a remarkable 38 Top 40 songs. At one point he spent 220 consecutive weeks on the Billboard chart with at least one song charting per week.

Of course, during the late ‘50s, and early ‘60s another guy was even more well known, so while all those achievements were impressive, Elvis was still king.

In 1997 Boone tried his hand at performing heavy metal songs in a jazz/big band style, and gave us In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy, one of the strangest albums you will ever hear.

That’s all for this edition of Pop Shots, but come back next Monday for more shots on all things pop.
