NYC Scene Report – Pronoun, Anna Rose, & Patio

This week’s NYC Scene Report features Pronoun getting slapped in the face, Anna Rose being the “Last Girl of the Rodeo,” and Patio digging into “Relics.”

* Pronoun has returned with her first new music in two years, and it’s a real slap in the face. Actually, it’s a slap in her face.

Titled “Slap Me In The Face,” the bouncy pop-rock song has strong Third Eye Blind vibes (and who doesn’t love Third Eye Blind?), and a unique backstory, which Pronoun explained in a statement, saying, “‘Slap Me In The Face’ is about a crazy night in with someone that turned into an internal joke of what if the world was literally fucking you. It’s about wanting a better situation, but giving in, and getting stuck in a moment where everything doesn’t feel horrible. This song poured out of me in one sitting – written, recorded, and produced in one day. The songs I feel the most about always seem to come this way.”

Check out the dodgeball themed video for “Slap Me In The Face,” which hopefully won’t give you any flashbacks to middle school gym class.

* Singer-songwriter Anna Rose has always poured her heart into her music, but the NYC native’s latest album, Last Girl of the Rodeo, features her most personal work to date.

Rose, now based in Nashville, discussed how the album came together, saying, “I started examining the idea of integrity — living with integrity, and working with integrity. Finding where thoughts and words meet actions. I stripped back the layers of my ego which led me to a place where I could make a really truthful record, away from the paradigms that I’d been steered toward in the past. This is the record you make when you have nothing left to lose.”

She continued, adding that in the past, “I put myself through the wringer of trying to be the best commercial artist that I could be. In doing that, I removed a piece of myself that was probably the most important. I think that's why this record feels so good to me. It just feels like the truth. I feel like I needed to give myself permission to do that.”

* Patio just released their sophomore LP, titled Collection, last week via Fire Talk Records, and while the album is new, the latest single from it will have you searching for “Relics.”

The band explained the inspiration for the indie rock song in a statement, saying, “‘Relics’ is a dark love song — and cautionary tale — about grief, sacrifice, and generational trauma. How much of yourself do you lose when you fall for someone else? And how much is in your control vs. pre-determined by destiny?”

Patio have a hometown show at Gottscheer Hall in Queens on September 30th, which will be followed by a five-date overseas tour from October 31st through November 5th.

Of course, you can check out their “Relics” right here.
