NYC Scene Report – LAPÊCHE, Juliet Quick, & Space Cadet

This week’s NYC Scene Report features LAPÊCHE tackling a difficult subject, Juliet Quick focusing on self work, and Space Cadet having some “Bad Luck.”

* Truly talented artists are capable of turning personal tragedy into something remarkable. Such is the case with the song “Oliver” by Brooklyn-based indie rock band LAPÊCHE.

The lead single from their upcoming album, Blood in the Water, due out April 9th via New Granada Records, the band explained the inspiration for “Oliver” in a statement, saying, “‘Oliver’ is about the pain of losing a wanted pregnancy, and facing that loss. (The lyrics) ‘Half baked, half right, half sick, half light, half closed, half cry, half yours, and half mine’ turns from a sequence of events into a rallying call as voices join. (It’s) a reminder of who’s around us even in our darkest moments.”

Turning pain into art, check out “Oliver,” and feel the emotion of LAPÊCHE.

* Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Juliet Quick is embracing self work with her latest single, “Circles,” which is off her upcoming EP, Glass Years, due out this Friday via Substitute Scene Records.

Discussing the song in a statement, Quick shared, “‘Circles’ is about filtering out the feedback of others, and just living inside yourself, even if that isn’t always the easiest place to be. I have trouble doing that – I have had this lifelong compulsion to be perceived as ‘good,’ even to people who I don’t think are ‘good!’ The particular kind of depression I was in when I wrote this song, though, gave me some relief from that at times. It was much more difficult to care about pleasing people. There are a handful of external voices that appear in the song – advice-givers, pedantic men, crust punks – who are kind of gently ignored. It is definitely a sad song, but it is also about freedom.”

It also features some gorgeous vocals, and strings. Click play, and enjoy.

* Sometimes I’ll hear something with such a classic vibe I have to double check to make sure it’s really a new song, and not a long lost gem from a bygone era. This was the case when I heard Space Cadet’s “Bad Luck,” a rock song that will have you loving every vintage moment of temporarily being taken away from the present day.

“Bad Luck” is off Space Cadet’s upcoming debut album, Lion on a Leash, which is due out March 26th via Wiretap Records. The project was recorded at Little Eden in Asbury Park, NJ, with Pete Steinkopt of Bouncing Souls.

Despite Lion On A Leash being the band’s debut, the Space Cadet duo of Dave Walsh and Matt Hock have been friends for nearly 25 years, creating music both separately, and together, during that time.

Check out “Bad Luck,” which, judging by the sound of it, is a sign of good things to come from Space Cadet.
