Pop Shots – 8 Songs in the Spirit of the Season of Giving
Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, with Christmas being this Friday, I’m dedicating this week’s Pop Shots to the holiday with a special column featuring songs that are in the spirit of the season of giving. I won’t be saying anyone gives love a bad name, or demanding you gimme all your lovin’ (although those are two fantastic songs), instead I’ll be focusing on songs that are actually about the act of giving … well, most of them are, anyway.
So let’s get to my quasi holiday themed selections, and since this is Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.
As an aside, this is my 600th edition of Pop Shots, which is quite an accomplishment (go me!), so if anyone needs me I’ll be celebrating blogger style – in my pajama pants in my home office.
Rock + Funk + Altruism = RHCP’s “Give It Away.” Honestly, how is this not in every radio stations’ holiday rotation? The “Little Drummer Boy” probably couldn’t make it past the audition process for the Chili Peppers
Speaking from a guy’s perspective, it’s really the perfect gift regardless of the season. Not to mention the fact that the video is so hot it could melt your screen.
This may be the single most recognizable song about giving. I’m pretty sure every human on earth knows it, and if you find someone who doesn’t like it they’re probably a year-round grinch.
Times are tough, and not everyone has an endless bank account. Maybe your love is all you have to give. If that’s the case, this BSB song can be your holiday anthem. No wrapping paper necessary!
A simple, multilingual, request, all 98 Degrees wants is just one night, una noche, so they can “give you the time of your life.” Personally, I’m gonna pass, but I imagine plenty of ladies, and even a number of dudes, would be more than happy to take them up on the offer.
Sometimes the best gifts are the gifts we give to ourselves, so if you’re stressed out this holiday season, take Demi Lovato’s advice and “Give Your Heart a Break.”
A solo effort from one of the New Kids on the Block, the lyrics of this song range from exceedingly disturbing – “It’s creepin' around in your head / Me holding you down in my bed / You don’t have to say a word / I’m convinced you want this,” to as least subtle as you can get – “I don’t care who leads / As long as we move horizontally.” It’s certainly a song about giving … something. Come to think of it, how the hell did this end up on TRL?
In this season of giving Shakira is telling us … ah, f*ck it, I included this because Shakira is super hot, and I’d love to wake up on Christmas morning to find her under my tree. Of course, I’d need to get a tree first, but that’s just a minor detail.
Happy Holidays!
That’s all for this edition of Pop Shots, but come back next Monday for more shots on all things pop.
