NYC Scene Report – Yo Kinky, Cautious Clay, & New Myths

This week’s NYC Scene Report features the debut of Yo Kinky, who are reminding us of “Someone I Used To Know,” Cautious Clay making sure he isn’t “Dying in the Subtlety,” and New Myths dealing with a “Bad Connection.”

* I absolutely love when I hear something for the first time and it’s so incredibly cool that I can’t wait to tell everyone about it, and that’s exactly how I felt when I heard Yo Kinky’s debut single “Someone I Used To Know.”

The Queens-based duo of Laura Wight and Tom Unish have a decidedly retro vibe, and much like the title of their song, they might remind you of someone you used to know. Personally, I feel they would’ve fit right in with the synth pop-rock, and New Wave acts of the ‘80s. In fact, while listening to “Someone I Used To Know” it’s easy to imagine Yo Kinky hanging out with Blondie, having a beer at the old CBGBs after sharing a bill together.

Yo Kinky will be releasing their self-titled debut EP in 2021, and you can check out the video for “Someone I Used To Know” right here.

* If you’re looking something soulful – and a giant cut out of Jason Statham’s head – look no further than Brooklyn-based R&B singer Cautious Clay’s “Dying in the Subtlety.”

The second single from his upcoming debut album, which will be released in 2021, Clay explained the inspiration for the song in a statement, saying, “‘Dying in the Subtlety’ is a look at what it means to lose sight of the bigger picture in the context of friendship and relationship dynamics. It examines how subtle moments of emotional uncertainty or exuberance can sometimes serve as false negatives or false positives. The song ultimately calls to attention the importance of being aware of these internal signals and being more long-sighted when evaluating who you choose to give love and meaningful attention to in an age of distraction.”

Click play on “Dying in the Subtlety,” and catch Cautious Clay’s vibe.

* When I saw the YouTube notification that New Myths had uploaded a new video I clicked play as fast as humanly possible.

One of my favorite indie bands in all of NYC, the trio’s latest is “Bad Connection,” a kick ass, totally addictive rock song that’s one part Veruca Salt, one part The Bangles.

When it comes to the video for “Bad Connection,” I hope you have a good internet connection, because you won’t want to miss a second of New Myths wielding a lightning bolt, traveling through the decades, and paying homage to some classic b-movies. It’s an incredibly fun clip, and I can’t wait to hear what they have for us in 2021.
