Pop Shots – 5 Songs to Help Us Be Thankful

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, with Thanksgiving being on Thursday, this week I have a special edition of Pop Shots dedicated to being thankful.

In an annual tradition, the day before our nation comes to blows over discounted electronics and clothing, we focus on what we’re thankful for, and these songs are the perfect playlist for the occasion. Of course, since this is Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

Geggy Tah – Whoever You Are

A fun song from 1996, Geggy Tah’s ode to a driver who allowed them to change lanes is the kind of simple thankfulness we should all embrace. Little things matter, and some little things – like good manners on the road – absolutely deserve four minute songs. (some little things kill, but I’ll leave that for Gavin Rossdale to discuss)

I legitimately think of this song at least twice a week, always while on the road, and wonder how many people other remember Geggy Tah, and his joyful hit.

Dido – Thank You

This song could be re-titled “Thank You Eminem,” because the entire reason we know Dido’s “Thank You” is because of Eminem’s use of the beat, and first verse, for his slang-creating hit “Stan.” That said, “Thank You” shows the concept of thankfulness in the face of everyday blues, and that’s an ideology more of us should try to espouse.

Fall Out Boy – Thnks fr the Mmrs

OK, so “Thanks for the memories even though they weren't so great” may not sound like the sincerest of sentiments, but sometimes close is close enough. Plus, this is just a straight up awesome song, and until I started writing this article I had no idea the Fall Out Boy mega-hit was produced by Babyface. Yes, that Babyface!

I think I may be missing the point of my own themed column right now.

Ariana Grande – thank u, next

Ah, yes, giving thanks, that’s what I’m writing about.

For the better part of the end of 2018, and the start of 2019, it was basically impossible to turn on the radio and not hear Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next.” A dedication to everything she’s learned from her exes, and the lessons she’s taught herself, the song is kind of the ultimate in both thankfulness, and self-love. I mean, if you can be thankful for your exes, you’re doing pretty dang well on the thankfulness scale.

Scale? … Meter? … Could someone look up the correct measurement for thankfulness?

Alanis Morissette – Thank U

On Alanis’ 1998 hit “Thank U” she gives thanks for everything that’s helped her grow as a person – the good, the bad, and the incredibly trying. She then filmed a video for it completely naked.

I’m not recommending the later for how you should conclude your Thanksgiving festivities, but if that’s how your family gets down, who am I to judge?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I do not apologize for putting that image in your head.

That’s all for this edition of Pop Shots, but come back next Monday for more shots on all things pop.
