Vid Pick: Majestik Originality - You Can’t...
Friday, February 21, 2014

A few weeks ago I brought up Crucial Conflict on social media. My buddy Majestik Originality mentioned that he sampled the group’s gigantic 1996 single “Hay” for his song “You Can’t...” which also features MC Elijah Black, and soul singer Nicholas Howard. With all three of those artists being longtime faves, and friends, of Adam’s World, I had to check it out.

The track has a cypher/battle theme, as does the video, which is a fantastic representation of what a real cypher looks like. I emphasize “real” because television, concerts, and awards shows, have watered down the idea of a cypher, which isn’t an organized event, but instead is a random occurrence when emcees find themselves on the same block, at the same time, and feel inspired to spit. The battle aspect of “You Can’t...” is evident in the way both emcees lay claim to their greatness. It’s true school hip-hop ideology, illustrated flawlessly (and yes, I rhymed that on purpose).
