What do you do when one of your favorite hip-hop artists releases a new song where the predominant instrumental accompaniment is a banjo? When the artist is Toussaint Morrison, you click play, and listen.
A powerful commentary on the current state of race relations in America, Morrison's latest, "Minnesota," will have your full attention. Lyrically, it's jaw dropping, and having the banjo, a historically country instrument, alongside Morrison's soulful vocals, is a subtle illustration of how two things many may view as disparate can be beautiful, and powerful, when joined together ... if people actually want to make that happen.
B-Listers are a select group of artists that were featured in my Artist Of The Week series that ran every Monday from April of '06 to April of '11. All of these artists have two things in common; extreme talent, and a flight path far too under the radar for my liking. They took on the title of B-Listers as they embraced being featured by me, Adam B. Check out the AOTW Archives for all the interviews.
