Pop Shots – Wrong Way

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from Post Malone’s emergency landing, to Madonna’s self-congratulatory tribute to Aretha Franklin, to the new Spotify playlist you’ll be sick of before you even press play, and since this is Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

* A plane carrying Post Malone and his entourage had to make an emergency landing after it blew two tires while taking off. I guess you could say that was one Post that was marked “return to sender.”

* Ariana Grande’s Sweetener debuted at #1 this past week. Anyone who covers the songs from it will be considered … an artificial sweetener. (two dad jokes in a row! I am f*ckin’ killin’ it this week!)

* In an Instagram post, Madonna attempted to explain her self-centered tribute to Aretha Franklin at this year’s VMAs. She wrote that her speech was not intended to be a tribute Franklin, adding, “I could never do her justice in this context or environment.” She could’ve just stopped at “I could never do her justice.”

* Dolly Parton was honored by Leadership Tennessee with their first-ever Dolly Parton Excellence in Leadership Award. Man, who coulda’ seen that one comin’?

* Longtime Pearl Jam fan Dennis Rodman crashed the band’s concert at Chicago’s Wrigley Field, walking on stage with a ukulele, and grabbing a microphone to talk about, among other things, his relationship with North Korea. I really hope there were at least a few people there so baked that they spent the rest of the night wondering if they imagined the whole thing.

* Marilyn Manson had to cut his Houston, TX, show short after collapsing during his cover of The Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This).” Is it just me, or is there something poetic about that?

* The Eagles’ greatest hits collection Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) is now 38x platinum, which moves it past Michael Jackson’s Thriller to become the highest certified album of all-time. The Eagles’ Hotel California is third on the list, because apparently everyone bought Their Greatest Hits, then realized it doesn’t have “Hotel California” on it, so they then bought Hotel California.

* A bomb threat prompted Rascal Flatts to abruptly end a concert in Indiana. Hmm, a threat of violence in the state of Indiana? Does anyone know what Bobby Knight was up to on the evening in question?

* To celebrate the musicians featured in the upcoming Guinness World Records book, the folks at Guinness have teamed up with Spotify to create a playlist made up of their favorite record breakers. According to Guinness, the playlist will include artists who have “a variety of record-breaking achievements, including tours, online streaming, social media, and even crowdfunding.” So basically, it’s a playlist of a whole bunch of sh*t you’re probably sick of hearing.

* Finally, Canadian trap-pop artist (and friend of the site) Makk Mikkael released her latest single, “Use Me,” and it’s a vibey gem perfect for late night chill sessions.

And with that, my time is up for the week, but I'll be back next week with more shots on all things pop.
