Pop Shots – Santa’s Sleigh Ride Playlist
Monday, December 25, 2017

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, with today being Christmas I decided to make this a special edition of Pop Shots. Creating this special edition didn’t require a Christmas miracle, just the miracle of Christmas journalism.

You see, being a marginally famous music journalist has its privileges, one of which is access, and I happen to have a contact at the North Pole who let me take a look at the playlist Santa Claus plugs into his sleigh while making his rounds on Christmas Eve (you didn’t think he flew around the world without tunes, did you?) Today, I bring you that playlist, and since this is Pop Shots you know everything is (holiday) seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

Cake – The Distance

Santa has to deliver gifts to tens of millions of children in just one night, so of course he’s gonna get hyped up, and inspired, by a chorus that features the lyrics, “He’s going the distance. He’s going for speed.” He’s Santa, and he goes for both of those things every year.

Steve Miller Band – Fly Like an Eagle

Delivering gifts doesn’t require a driver’s license, it requires the power of airborne reindeer! Those reindeer “Fly Like an Eagle” to help Santa make his rounds.

Side note: While we’re on the subject of the Steve Miller Band, it’s a little known fact that Santa Claus is also a certified space cowboy. #TheMoreYouKnow

Fat Joe w/ Lil’ Wayne – Make It Rain

With all due respect to Fat Joe and Lil’ Wayne, nobody, and I mean nobody makes it rain like Santa Claus. So if you faintly heard an older, cheery, voice quietly rapping, “I make it rain on these hoes” on your rooftop, you know who paid you a visit.

Side note: He doesn’t think your kids are hoes … unless they actually are.

The Bangles – In Your Room

Santa doesn’t use the USPS, UPS, or FedEx. He isn’t sending gifts with DHL, or LaserShip. He’s making a personal appearance “In Your Room.”

I also hear he’s a huge fan of Susanna Hoffs, which something he and I have in common. Sadly, he’s never actually left Susanna Hoffs in my room. What’s up with that, Santa?

Cookie Monster – C is for Cookie

The man has a one night diet that consists solely of milk and cookies. It’s no wonder he has such a belly, think of all the carbs and fats! That said, it works for him, and this anthem to cookie consumption is a major part of the soundtrack to his life.

Digital Underground – No Nose Job

As the legend goes, Santa ascends back up your chimney by “laying his finger aside of his nose.” With that mind, it should be obvious he’s never going to be interested in a nose job.

I bet you never imagined Santa Claus and Humpty Hump would be such kindred spirits!

The Lonely Island w/ Justin Timberlake – Dick in a Box

When all is said and done, and Santa has finished delivering gifts to all the good boys and girls of the world, he arrives back at the North Pole, but he still has one last gift to deliver … and this one’s for Mrs. Claus.

And with that, my time is up for the week, but I'll be back next week with more shots on all things pop.
