There are a lot of hip-hop songs out there that will make you feel wild, angry, crazy, even sad. While all of those emotions are perfectly valid, sometimes you want a song that puts you in a good mood. As a writer, and producer, this can be an ultimate challenge, which is why the latest from JSOUL and Substantial, "Get On Down," is such an impressive song. With dope lyrics, killer production, and a very cool vibe, it's a perfect summertime jam.
The video for "Get On Down" may give older listeners a few flashbacks, and that's completely intentional, as according to HiPNOTT Records, "This new vid is a visual nod to The Box/Video Music Jukebox era, when many rap videos were low in budget, but high in wordplay and boom bap."
As someone who grew up in that era, and is a fan of Substantial, it's a perfect mix!
B-Listers are a select group of artists that were featured in my Artist Of The Week series that ran every Monday from April of '06 to April of '11. All of these artists have two things in common; extreme talent, and a flight path far too under the radar for my liking. They took on the title of B-Listers as they embraced being featured by me, Adam B. Check out the AOTW Archives for all the interviews.
