Pop Shots – 8 Songs for Your Isolation Playlist

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. With the popularity of last month’s special coronavirus playlist, I’ve decided that with the new rules and regulations regarding social gatherings it was time for a playlist dedicated to being stuck at home. So cozy up in your pajama pants (because no one can see your legs during your Zoom meetings), and spin these tunes to help get through our current situation.

Of course, since this is Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

Alice DJ – Better Off Alone

In 1999 Alice DJ (then known as Alice Deejay) asked “Do you think you’re better off alone?” and in 2020 the answer is a resounding yes. Sorry Alice, but if it’s any consolation, we were certainly not better off alone 21 years ago while we were drinking in our local college bars with your song as part of the soundtrack.

Madness – Our House

Health organizations the world over have recommended we stay in one specific place during this pandemic – our house, in the middle of street. Although some would say that’s pure Madness.

Tiffany – I Think We’re Alone Now

“I think we’re alone now / There doesn’t seem to be anyone around.” What was once a line about young love sung by Tiffany (originally by Tommy James and the Shondells) can now be interpreted as a lyric about pandemic safety. Admit it, you kinda always knew that Tiffany would be there for us in an apocalypse.

Jason Derulo – Ridin’ Solo

While there will be no going to the club, you’re probably safest doing your best Jason Derulo impression and “Ridin’ Solo.” Come to think of it, why doesn’t the government just get him to make the announcements, he makes being solo actually seem enjoyable.

De La Soul – Me, Myself & I

When you’re truly ridin’ solo the only people you’re hanging out with are “Me, Myself & I.” On the plus side – you get to listen to De La Soul.

Billy Idol – Dancing With Myself

When you’re alone all the rules of decorum get thrown out the window. This means when you decide to let loose you can really let loose, so crank up some Billy Idol and embrace the fact that for the time being your best dancing partner is yourself … no matter how crazy your moves may be!

Kid Cudi – Day ’N’ Nite

It just so happens that our pandemic isolation falls on an entire month that’s 420. With that in mind you’d be hard pressed to find lyrics more appropriate than Kid Cudi’s – “‘Cause day and night / The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night / He’s all alone through the day and night / The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night (at, at, at night).” So light that sh*t, smoke that sh*t … uhhh, but I guess don’t pass that sh*t, because there’s no one to pass it to, and even if there was you probably wouldn’t want their germs.

Divinyls – I Touch Myself

Hey, when you’re alone, the phrase “do you” can get pretty literal.

That’s all for this edition of Pop Shots, but come back next Monday for more shots on all things pop.
