3 Reasons You Should See Talay Live

Every once in a blue moon I’ll see an artist on a small stage and immediately know they won’t be on small stages for much longer. This was the case when I caught NYC-based rock artist Talay (pronounced Tally) at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 1 this past weekend.

Midway through her set I had the distinct feeling I was watching an artist who I will likely see on Warped Tour in the coming years, rocking, and endearing herself to, audiences nationwide.

Her show was just this past Saturday, and I already can’t wait to see her again. Want to know why? Here are three reasons you should see Talay live … and I promise the floaties she’s wearing in the picture will be explained.

1. She’s Pure Pop Punk Fun

With songs like “Parents’ House,” “Let’s Get Heather High,” and “I Hope Your Band Goes Nowhere,” you know right away you’re in for a good time when attending one of Talay’s shows. When she performs these songs live, backed by a bassist and a drummer, they have a raucous pop punk vibe. That kind of joyous energy spreads quickly, and Talay’s incredibly outgoing personality only adds to this.

Talay basically becomes everyone’s best friend while she’s on stage.

2. Her Performance is Fast Paced, but With Plenty of Crowd Interaction

As a rule, indie artists don’t get the luxury of having extended sets, which means they have to pack a lot of punch into a short amount of time. Knowing this, Talay has mastered the art of soundbite storytelling, engaging the crowd with just a sentence or two in-between songs. Because of this, she never strays from the frantic pace of her music, but still relates to everyone in the crowd.

3. If She Wants a Beach Party, Then Dammit, She’s Having a Beach Party

Talay had a really cool concept for this particular show – she wanted to have a beach party at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 1, and extend summer for as long as possible. She asked fans to come dressed as if they were going to the beach, and offered drinks to those who went all in with the theme.

Normally, August is a brutally hot and humid time in NYC, so dressing in less is the norm. Unfortunately for Talay, it was an unseasonably mild week, with highs not even reaching the 80s. That said, she did not let the cooler temps put a freeze on her concept, sporting a bikini top, and floaties, while performing, and even throwing a beach ball into the crowd.

For a half hour, the world was her beach party, and the world was better for it.
