Vid Pick: Dessa - Call Off Your Ghost
Friday, August 16, 2013

Dessa has been one of my favorite artists for years (she was an Artist Of The Week here back in February of 2010, and I’ve interviewed her, and seen her live, a number of times since then). Her latest album, Parts Of Speech, was released in June, and should be gracing numerous year end top ten lists. We have a ways to go before the conclusion of the year, however, and Dessa has some singles to release. Her latest off of Parts Of Speech is “Call Off Your Ghost.” A personal song about her reaction to a breakup, this is a look into an aspect of Dessa’s life she hasn’t gone quite as deeply into on previous efforts. While the subject matter is fresh, the production is classic Doomtree. Oh, and it should go without saying that the lyrics are incredibly poetic, the emceeing is top notch, and the singing is fantastic. The video is also gorgeous.

As an aside, if this is what she creates after a breakup, I wouldn’t object to Dessa following Taylor Swift’s dating pattern.
